Body Dysmorphic Disorder BDDPeople who suffer from body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) are convinced that at least one aspect of their appearance is hideous – even despite repeated cosmetic surgery, in many cases.

Now, research at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA has found that people with body dysmorphic disorder process visual information differently than others do.

People with and without the disorder looked at digital images of faces. Brain scans showed that relative to the others, those with body dysmorphic disorder relied more on the analytical left side of the brain, even when looking at blurry photographs that generally require more holistic right-brain activity. Research from Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore) and the National Cancer Institute shows that the incidence of HPV related oral cancer in the U.S. significantly increased from 1973-2004, particularly among younger men.

Oral cancer kills more people than melanoma, and half of those diagnosed with oral cancer survive five years or less. Researchers believe the rate increase may be related to an increase in oral sex. The good news is that there is now a test that can help you prevent this dreaded fate. (more…)
