Calories Burned During Exercise

Calories Burned During Exercise

Continued from The Best Way to Handle a Food Craving.

Question I keep hearing how important exercise is for weight control, but when I see the number of calories exercise actually burns, I feel discouraged. Is it really worth it?

Answer It can be discouraging when you look at a chart that says one hour of walking (at a rate of, say, 3.5 miles per hour) only burns 300 calories or that 30 minutes of aerobics only burns about 250 calories.

Instead, look at the cumulative effects and how calories burned add up over time. For instance, if you walked for one hour five times a week and ate exactly the same as you do now, you could lose about 20 pounds in a year’s time without dieting.

Exercise also eases stress, anxiety, and depression, all of which can lead to overeating.
