So what is brown fat? Brown fat can be described as an adipose tissue that helps infants keep warm. A number of recent studies seem to suggest that the amount of brown fat in adults (specifically in older individuals) is inversely related to body mass index, which could mean that brown fat plays an important role in human metabolism.
Severely overweight people and those with high blood sugar levels have less brown fat than people who maintain a healthy weight range. Studies also show that women and those with elevated thyroid levels have more brown fat.
