Body Fat Measurements

Continued from Does Excess Weight Matter?
The skinny on body fat measurements Doctors recommend that you use two measurements when assessing body fat-related health risks: body mass index (BMI) and either waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) or waist circumference (WC).
That is because BMI alone has limitations. It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build. BMI may underestimate body fat in older people and others who have lost muscle mass.
Waist-to-hip ratio appears to best assess health risks – particularly heart disease – in older people. And, WHR and WC may better predict premature death from cancer and heart disease than BMI, especially for women.
