Best Nutrients for Muscle Recovery

What is the best nutrient(s) for muscle and energy recovery for an extreme athlete (especially before bed)? I am so overwhelmed with pills and products that are available and I never get the same info when I research them – what do you recommend? Little Rocky. Thank you! [via Ask Questions]

Different athletes have different needs. It is hard to make a specific recommendation not knowing anything about your particular situation.

Generally speaking, you need to give your body a diverse nutritional support. This means that your diet should include a wide variety of vegetables, proteins, healthy fats, and fruits.

Having said that, if I had to choose one nutrient to take before going to bed, it would be casein protein. It does not have to be a casein-based protein shake, you can just eat yogurt or cottage cheese.

I do not know why you are overwhelmed with pills. If you follow a balanced diet, you do not need to take any supplements. There are some exceptions, of course, think pharmaceutical grade fish oil and magnesium, but other than that, I do not think you need to take anything else, unless your blood work shows that you are deficient in certain vitamins and or minerals.
