Atkins Bars and Net Carbs

The Atkins Advantage Marshmallow Mudslide Bar wrapper states “Only 3g Net Carbs.” The nutrition Facts show Total Carb. 19, Dietary Fiber 5g, Sugar Alcohols 3 g. When I subtract 5+3 from 19 I get 11 as the answer. Where is the other 8g of carbs? Zeb. [via Ask Questions]

You are correct, as I have described in How to Count Net Carbs and How to Calculate Net Carbs, to figure our how many Net Carbs a product contains, you need to subtract fiber and sugar alcohols from the total carbohydrates amount.

In your case, you are left with 11 grams of carbs, but Atkins claims that the bar has only 3 Net Carbs. Why? Look at the list of ingredients. Do you see glycerin? They have been criticized for this, but they do not count glycerin, because they claim it has a negligible effect on blood sugar levels.
