Al Fresco All Natural and Almost Perfect Sausage

Cat Cora Iron ChefA few days ago, after I finished my workout, I was peacefully dreaming about Iron Chef Cat Cora making me one of those fancy “havens on a bun”. It is a burger made with foie gras, truffles, Japanese Kobe beef and a few other ingredients.

I know, it is disappointing to read about “food porn” on a health and fitness website, but hey, after an intense workout, I deserved it. Besides, to keep your cravings in check, and assuming that you follow your diet and exercise plans at least 85% of the time, I always recommend occasionally indulging in your favorite foods.

Excuses, excuses…Unsurprisingly Cat Cora did not show up to cook me that burger, but on that day, I discovered something a lot more interesting.

Let me introduce you to Al Fresco Fully Cooked Chicken Sausage. I was a bit surprised when I saw it at Costco (Sam’s Club), but it seems that a consumer demand for natural, healthy food is making a difference.

This sausage contains 19 grams of protein per serving (1 link 85g), but not just any protein, it comes from skinless chicken meat. It does not contain any artificial ingredients, such as nitrites, MSG, or preservatives, which is uncommon for prepackaged foods. It has only 120 calories, 0g trans fat, and 2 grams of saturated fat.

al fresco sausageIt comes in variety of flavors, which is nice, but only the “Sweet Italian” flavor has 1 gram of sugar, the others go up to 4 grams. So why is it only an almost perfect sausage? To tell you the truth, it comes pretty darn close to being perfect.

However, the amount of sodium (550mg) is higher than I would like to see in one link. 100 grams of roasted, skinless chicken breast naturally contains only 74mg of sodium, so 550mg is way too high for one serving (85grams).

The amount of sugar (4g in some flavors) is pretty low, but there is no reason no to use a healthy alternative, such as Erythritol, or some other natural sugar substitute. Finally yet importantly, to score a perfect mark, it has to be organic.

Having said, I was so impressed with the taste of Al Fresco Chicken Sausage, and overall quality of the ingredients, that I stack my freezer with a supply of it enough to feed an army of bodybuilders for month of Sundays.
